| Pear Shaped "Transitional" Tungsten Bulb |
This is what I call a "transitional" bulb. It was probably made in a time in which cage filaments had just been abandoned in favor of coiled tungsten filaments. The shape of this bulb is designed for a cage filament. It is not the best shape for a coiled tungsten filament because there is a lot of wasted, empty space at the top of the bulb. This bulb might have been made this way because the manufacturer of this bulb (whoever it was) had not received the new bulb shape molds yet. The "optimized" envelope shape for a coiled tungsten filament is the same that is used today. Most likely, these "transitional" bulbs are extremely rare, yet aren't likely to be worth much. Still, I believe they are nice items to have in a bulb collection. =)
